Next-Door Neighbor webcomic editor and ACT-I-VATE founder Dean Haspiel is getting rave reviews for his illustrations for the graphic novel, The Alcoholic, the fictional tale of writer “Jonathan A.”… written by Jonathan Ames. Ames, of course, is one of America’s funniest, intense, and beloved writers, as well as an NDN collaborator himself. His story, Next-Door Neighborless, with Nick Bertozzi, kicked off SMITH’s Next-Door Neighbor series. Reviewing The Alcoholic in The New York Times, George Gustines describes one particularly intense scene as, “a testament to the superb work of Mr. Haspiel, who conveys, through the characters’ body language, their anguish and true feelings.” The LA Times calls The Alcoholic, “a scabby and subversive masterpiece.”
In a recent piece on Art Spiegelman and the hot comic scene, Philadelphia Inquirer’s Dan Deluca gives Haspiel the last word, in which he explains why he’s so passionate about the form: “It’s just like film and literature. It’s what you say and don’t say, what you show and don’t show. You can do anything with a blank piece of paper. I can take you anywhere with my pencil.” We could not agree more, and hope readers have had the chance to experience where the talented writers and artists behind SMITH’s webcomics have taken readers.
Congrats to Dean and Jonathan!
