Editorial internship

As a SMITH intern, you’ll have opportunities to write for the site, generate ideas for new projects, and participate in as much or little of the making of an online magazine as you desire. There’s some grunt (spreadsheets, transcribing interviews, working the table at our events), but not much. What we will do is give you a great opportunity to get some hands-on, practical experience at the ground level of a hot indie Web site. We will ask you to research, copyedit, and spread SMITH stories across the Net to appropriate sites. If you’re a master of social networking, or want to be, we’ll get you involved on our Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and Tumblr pages. You’ll be working with people with years of experience at some of the top magazines in the industry from Wired to ESPN to Men’s Journal and Salon—and making friends.

Who we’re looking for
College students or recent graduates who can work 7-10 hours a week either virtually or in our Manhattan office for a minimum of three months. You need to be smart, creative, self-motivated, professional, and have a passion for storytelling. The well-intentioned but ultimately unreliable really should not apply. You should know Wordpress and Excel, or be willing to learn both right away. And seriously, do a gut check—we work too hard to have time for flakes.

Stipend
No pay for the first six weeks, then a $50 a month stipend if you’re still with us. If you’re amazing we’ll throw you the occasional bonus.

How to apply:
Send an email to: “news [at] smithmag.net” with your resume and a short cover letter telling us why you’re interested in a SMITH Magazine internship. And complete one of the following three assignments (pick one among the first three) and then do assignment #4.

  • 1. A 250 to 400-word Brush With Fame that you’ve either written yourself or assigned to a friend who you know has had a celebrity encounter (if you haven’t)
  • 2. A 150 to 300 word blog entry about a new or timely storytelling “Site We Love” or a “Call for Submissions” we haven’t done yet.
  • 3. An example of an unknown writer/blogger whom SMITH should interview or publish or one book you think Memoirville should excerpt in 2011.
  • 4. Pick a topic (e.g. “summer,” “insomnia,” “California,” “hell”) and search for Six-Word Memoirs on the topic. Write a 50 to 100 word intro introducing that topic and then list ten Six-Word Memoirs you like on it with a link to the author below each one. Refer to the “Best Six-Word Memoirs of the Week” in the Six-Word blog for an example of how this might look.
    • Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please send attachments in Word or Rich Text format.
