Ron Paul Jumps the Shark

Friday, July 6th, 2007

For those of you who don’t follow politics to the point of nerdy obsessiveness that drives away all your relatives, friends and lovers, who begged you to stop checking your RSS feeds and shower and shave — uh, not that any of that has ever happened to me — a little background info: Ron Paul, long-shot Republican presidential candidate, is big on the Internet. Like real big. Like totally out of proportion to his zero percent poll numbers in the real world.

Mostly, this is achieved by having totally crazy supporters who, apparently, organize big Internet campaigns to drive his numbers up on Digg, Technorati, Facebook, YouTube, etc., etc., etc. Then they complain because the media is not paying attention to him and his huge Internet following — which is true. Because they’re crazy.

Anyway, one of his supporters on YouTube seems to have noticed, and has now made his first YouTube appearance ever, in order to ask his fellow Ron Paul supporters to stop being so obviously crazy. It’s many different kinds of awesome. Join us, won’t you?

The Dorkiest Thing I’ve Ever Seen

Friday, June 29th, 2007

One measure of an ad campaign’s success, I think: how many YouTube video responses does it inspire? Well, the infamous Mac or PC ads have probably picked up the most of any I’ve seen. And the following video is, in my humble opinion, the best I’ve seen. Somewhere, Diddy is sad that none of his songs have ever been this good.

Billy’s Balls

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

No, it’s not what you think it is. Get your minds out of the gutter, people. Instead, it’s a demonstration of what must surely be the real purpose of YouTube: documenting, and sharing with the world, our insanely cool stupid human tricks.

If you don’t see or hear from me for a couple months, it’s because I’m locked in a basement somewhere trying to learn how to do that.

Father’s Day Video Messages

Friday, June 15th, 2007

I wanted to bring a video in honor of Father’s Day this week. And I found a great one. OK, it’s not quite Mr. T singing about how we should respect our mothers, but it’s damn good anyway.

For this video, the people working on a film called Evolution of Dad, a documentary tentatively scheduled for 2009 about “what it means to be a nurturing, involved, contemporary American father,” went out in New York City and interviewed 150 people to get their Father’s Day messages. The results are pretty touching.

The Love is Late, but the Love is Here

Monday, June 11th, 2007

Oh, technical difficulties — always fun, especially when they prevent you from getting a Friday video up on, you know, Friday. (Who said Macs were better? Certainly not me.) So as a thank you for your patience, here are not one but two videos to brighten your Monday.

First up is a song advertising a gathering of YouTubers here in New York, coincidentally right down the street from my office. I’m still thinking about whether or not this scares me, but I bet getting all those people who’ve only ever seen each other online together will at least be interesting.

Since our first video was all about actual personal media news, after the jump is one you can enjoy for its pure topical stupidity/humor.

Even YouTube Celebrities Can’t Get Laid

Friday, June 1st, 2007

Sometimes I wonder — if I were a celebrity, would women like me? The answer, of course, is probably, but I can’t sing, dance, act or play any sports worth a damn, so I’m kind of screwed. But maybe, I think to myself (OK, I don’t really actually think this, but bear with me, the video intros are a lot more fun this way) what if I just put up videos on YouTube? Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that I put up funny videos that got hundreds of thousands of views? Would women like me then?

Yeah, turns out the answer is still no. Sigh.

Finally, A Cure — And it’s on YouTube!

Friday, May 25th, 2007

This video’s been bouncing around the political blogosphere a bit lately, and as it’s absolutely hilarious, I thought I’d bring it here for a Friday video to leave you laughing as you enter the first weekend of summer. Enjoy.

YouTube’s Service Journalism

Friday, May 18th, 2007

It took me, I kid you not, hours to find today’s video — everything I tried just didn’t cut it. I even found a funny Super Mario parody, but the ending sucked, and I just couldn’t do that to you all. But it was worth it, because finally what I found is a great instructional video. This is no DIY big food, people. This is something we all can use.

Ha. They said “queue.”

I Pity the Fool Who’s Bad to His Mother

Friday, May 11th, 2007

In honor of Mother’s Day this weekend, here’s a video out there that really, I think, teaches us just how much respect we should all give our mothers. I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say it’s a message in song, from a certain 80’s icon who pitied a lot of people. Thank god for YouTube, and well, thank god for mothers.

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone.

Best. Wedding. Ever.

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Didn’t know you could do this, but apparently, yes, you can spend your time having an elaborate wedding in a video game, make a “video” of it and then post it to YouTube. And it can be awesome. Make sure you stick around for the vows — if they don’t bring tears to your eyes, you’re made of stone. Or whatever the online gaming version of stone is.
