“Mom’s a puzzle. Little Pieces Everywhere”—Six-Word MOMoirs

By Larry Smith

Fired therapist, one mother is enough. Sometimes mom needs a timeout. Mommy’s boobies no longer daddy’s boobies. Mom’s big Get Even: my kids. Mom is transgender. Hey new dad! In meeting. Binky in suit pocket. I’m pregnant. I’m not a buddha. A sake mom, not soccer mom. Smells like sewer…love him anyway. Perpetually lactating in a purple minivan. Days of whine and runny noses.

Once again, as Mother’s Day approaches, we search for the words to describe that complicated and amazing thing called Mom. And once again, the SMITH community has rocked our world with Six-Worders about motherhood, and the relationship with their own moms, with what we call Six-Word MOMoirs. Check out the MOMoirs, as well as a special collaboration SMITH is doing with The New York Times Well blog for Mother’s Day. We’ll be giving away Six-Word Memoir books to our favorite six NYT reader MOMoirs, and then reading them at our live Six-Word Story Show on May 18 in New York City.

Called “I Am Turning Into My Mother: A Six-Word Story Slam on Mothers and Daughters, Fathers and Sons,” the show is the second in our series at NYC’s 92YTribeca and promises to be an amazing night of storytelling about moms, dads, and being a parent. You’ll hear Six-Word Memoirs and the longer backstories from Susan Orlean, Joe Lockhart, Deborah Copaken Kogan, James Bernard, Laura Zigman, Gesine Bullock-Prado, and for the first time telling their story, the very special father-son team of Christoph Marshall and Eddie Comacho.

Get advance tickets now—this one’s going to be good.
