The best boss I ever had understood that we needed to be successful in our roles in order for himself to succeed. He gave us support, tools and his time. He always had our back and didn't throw us under the bus.

This is a rare trait in bosses today. There are many articles about managing your boss. The focus is the boss and not the end goals of the company. Too much wasted time and energy could be solved (and profits increased) by bosses working to help their reports succeed.
