"Your joy is your sorrow unmasked".
Backstory
A quote from "The Prophet", Kahlil Gibran.A favourite book of mine that has been uncracked for far too long.
The full passage is:
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

NOA - I think it is open to personal interpretation. For me the above quote means that your joy never leaves you - it only gets covered up sometimes.canadafreeze says,
The quote is certainly open to interpretation. I provided the full quote in the backstory to make the quote say what it means to me.catsmeow says,
Deep emotion cuts both ways. Lovely quote. Thanks, cf.illuminatrix says,
This is gorgeous. It first strikes me as something like, the space forced open in ourselves from suffering and surviving sorrow becomes an empty reservoir for the capacity of feeling joy. Certainly, I feel that we can feel joy before we feel sorrow, but I can't deny that my reservoir expanded mightily through having suffered sorrow. The second impression I got (from the latter part of the quote) is that much sorrow is merely the painful echo of lost joys, cleverly masked by our subconscious (or merely obscured by complexity). Very thought provoking, thanks, CF!KharisJo says,
