I was honestly not trying to make a spelling statement, just really feeling useless right now! But now that we are on the subject, I always just say to myself "ripple effect" and that helps me remember the difference between "affect" and "effect." It gets REALLY confusing for me though when "effect" is used as a verb, as in "to bring about!"
