28 years. Hasn't learned anniversary protocol.

Backstory

Congratulations to my parents on 28 years of marriage. 28 is the year of the orchid, so we bought one for them. My dad booked couple's massages and dinner at the restaurant they used to go to every year. It's a cold, rainy day, but he's planned out a nice, sweet evening together.

He walks in the door. He gets a call from my mom. Since 28 is the year of the orchid, she says, why don't they cancel the massages and dinner and go to the arboretum for lunch instead.

And I just want to tell her - Mom. You can't do that. You can't tell him to cancel the plans. It's not how it works. You have to let him do something nice for you, you just have to let him do it.

But she doesn't know how that works. In 28 years, she still doesn't know. And I feel so sad for both of them.

Loon says,

ugh, like Raymond's mother-in-law

Wench says,

My dad was able to time it so they could go to the arboretum (for an orchid show they happen to be having) and still make it for dinner tonight. Nice save.

MO_Thoughts2 says,

Wow ...she's just clueless. Hope your Dad enjoys his day.

DynamicDbytheC says,

This memoir is disturbing. Not for the reasons you would think. I am actually getting used to your mom's "quirks" to put it nicely. This disturbs me because James and I will celebrate 29 years together in April which means I am old enough to be your mother. Yikes. I feel your age.

Wench says,

My mom takes good care of herself, I think she's beautiful. She doesn't feel 'old' to me, and you most certainly do not, either. =)

Wench says,

I mean, George Clooney is 51 and in my Top 3 most absolutely dreamy men alive list, so I don't think you need to worry!!!
