Lost on the lonely middle road.
BackstoryPerusing old poems. Amazed to find I don't hate all of them. I wrote this when I was sixteen.
The Lonely Middle Road
"Two highways," she said with her hands in mine
"And you alone must choose.
There cannot be another man
To take this path for you.
Your feet must walk your chosen course-
Your heart not think to sigh.
You cannot take both roads and so
To one say your goodbyes."
I asked her if there was a way
To walk between the two.
To here be walking on the left
And here the right walk, too.
I begged her "If there is a way
Then tell me, darling, please.
For only one can gain me friends-
The other enemies.
And I've a life I need to live!
I feel too young to choose.
How can I make a choice between
The world and keeping you?"
"Too long!" she cried, "Too long you take.
My love, you break my heart.
I will not have you wondering
If we should really part.
If other worlds are calling you
I will not keep you here.
The narrow road is not for you.
And so, goodbye, my dear."
An emptiness invaded me.
A coldness filled my soul.
And suddenly I understood
The lonely middle road.
The world can offer all the riches
You've been dreaming of.
But too late I have realized
It cannot buy you love.
