Backstory
Medical clinic? No. Dentist office? Nope. Library? Uh-uh. Shopping mall? Of course not. On hold? Never. Everywhere I go, there is a TV playing to no one in particular, a radio tuned to the local blare, piped music and general static in every conceivable public place - even in some parking lots - and nowhere is there that golden sound I crave. Silence. Is it a commodity that has turned from golden to no longer available? It's making me crazy ...

Even though I live a mile from work sometimes I drive the 5 mile block just to get a few minutes of silence between work and kids. I understand.Redx3 says,

Ah...you should come visit my mountain. The silence is a life form around here. :)Dragonflower says,
At home I don't usually have the radio on and I haven't had a TV since we went digital in 2008 (USA). I cherish the silence. There is still noise but it's what I call humanity-- people walking by, cars starting, stuff like that. I hear the birds too, seagulls. And sometimes a train, which sounds a lot like a foghorn. But out in the world, noisy! Except the new yoga studio I just started going to. The old class I went to was noisy- that's why I stopped, I just realized that!
Even the laundromat has a TV that no one really watches. I like the soothing sounds of the washers and dryers- hypnotic to me. It's why I like laundry day. Guess that is just city life.

My favorite place is a mountain top in winter, silence and an occasional breeze. Then the sound of my snowboard. I understand this memoir all too well.Staraj says,
