Twenty-one years ago, Dad killed himself.

Backstory

I used to be ashamed of this life-changing event in my life. Not anymore. I had to write about his suicide in my book because it has shaped who I am, both positively and negatively. My dad's death resulted from the disease of depression, one that I have struggled with and continue to be treated for. With my struggles, though, I think I am stronger, even when I don't feel like it. I am a survivor of suicide.

It's been said that no one dies without his or her own consent (an outrageous statement found in 'A Course in Miracles')-with suicide that's especially clear. Other instances of dying not so...

- to acknowledge life-altering events that shape us into who we are is an amazing thing to do, and writing about it is so powerful. Good for you.

Some good can always come out of a bad situation and your good has been revealed by your book and the way you have been able to handle things. You are a survivor and can help someone else to become one.
