What other holiday is it? MERRYCHRISTMAS!

Backstory

I respect others beliefs, and if you want to wish me Happy Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or any other ritual you practice, that is perfectly acceptable...but at times this PC way of thinking can be more detrimental than good. I celebrate Christmas and it is my right to wish you the same, and we should all respect each others beliefs, not acknowledging this in the long run, causes more harm than good. An open dialogue should bring us closer together in understanding each others faith etc.. So saying happy holidays may be the 'easy' way to seemingly include all...but isn't that like hiding your head in the sand? I feel it defeats the purpose of the season...so a very Merry Christmas to all and a peaceful New Year! :)

I just had a big discussion with someone about this the other day. It was because I had seen more signs in store windows that said, "Merry Christmas," and I wondered if we were going back to that again. I think the intention of the change to "Happy Holidays" was a good one, but it has felt like something was missing for me when I couldn't express the greeting of the holiday I celebrate and hear it be said to me. But I started to think what it would feel like to me if someone wished me a Happy Hanukkah, or Kwanzzaa and decided it probably wouldn't feel quite right--even though I also respect all other faiths and beliefs and wouldn't be offended. It is always difficult to be inclusive. Going back in the way-back machine, I remember when we started saying, "Ms." instead of Miss or Mrs. The intention was good there too..... but my married daughter insists on being "Mrs." She says shes proud of being married and wants everyone to know.

Having said all that, since I know you celebrate Christmas like I do, then I wish you the most joyous and happy Christmas ever. Merriest Christmas, kisskissgirl !!

kisskissgirl says,

Just to comment on the 'Ms'. I do like to be addressed as Miss since I have never been married....when filling out forms and they ask for a salutation but then there's no choice for 'Miss' just 'Ms' that does irritate me! I agree with your sister! And by the way no one has ever wished me a Happy Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, but it makes me happy when I am greeted with a Merry Christmas! I do hope, like you have noticed, that we do go back to that again. Not that I have to remind you, but the reason for the season, as it's said, has been lost if we don't continue saying Merry Christmas! I agree with your sentiments! Wishing you and your family the same!
Thank you Autumn22!

"Happy Holidays," as a greeting, has been around long before the tide of polital correctness washed across our culture. It was meant to be inclusive of Christmas and the New Year holidays. "Happy Holidays" .and "Spirit of the Season," etc. have been in print use since long before anyone was talking about Kwanzaa. My Jewish friends have yet to grumble about receiving Christmas cards, gifts or Christmas fudge in the mail. Of course I also handwrite a "Happy Hanukkah" right next to the printed "Merry Christmas" out of recognition and respect. It feels like the media and some conservatives have made more of an issue of the use of "Happy Holidays" than what actually exists. The other day my friend was ranting about how "they've" made a law that people in national chain stores were no longer allowed to say "Merry Christmas." Having just said that she never watches the news, I mentioned that I watch/listen to lots of news, I asked where she'd heard this tidbit of information. Needless to say, after further brief conversation, she conceded that there was no basis for this statement and in fact employees of every store we were in that day sent us off with a hearty "Merry Christmas!" The Happy Holidays complaint feels like far less of an legitimate issue of cultural
bulldozing of the Christian religion than it is a topic that some would use as a wedge of cultural divisiveness. Christmas is not the only holiday that bears bragging rights as a celebration of love and the admirable aspects of humanity. They are the reasons for multiple cultures' seasons.

I hope everyone will feel comfortable and happy greeting others in whatever way they wish. Any sort of human connection ought to be welcome in the digital age.

L2L3 says,

Well said, and in far less words;-P

kisskissgirl says,

Yes, but December 25th is Christmas....

L2L3 says,

Jesus is portrayed as being incredibly tolerant. I suspect he would be more concerned about motivations of the heart than those of greeting choice, regardless of a designated calendar day.

If only......!
