Backstory
Someone sent me birthday money last week with strict instructions to use it for myself. I didn't, I put it in the Rent envelope. I would really love to go out, I figured, but times are tough. Fortunately, Nathaniel took it back out of the envelope. So last Tuesday, when we arrived at my parent's house on my birthday for a multi-day Thanksgiving celebration, he said he was taking me out. My favorite restaurant is two blocks from my parent's house and it was a beautiful night. Walking over, baby-free, we laughed at how we used to go on dates at least twice a week. Some things are easier without kids, for sure. At the restaurant, I kept wanting to check my phone to see if Constantine was ok but I resisted the urge. It was nice, just for an hour and a half, to forget about everything that's happening right now, all the uncertainty and stress, and just be on a date. It reminded us that we're still human.

We are no broke but we need nights out for other reasons. On Thanksgiving we had reservations at a restaurant where ironically James had won a gift certificate and his bike club had given him more gift certificates to dine out. The irony is in the fact that James is now handicapped and walks with a cane, actually limps with a cane. He laid on the floor to put his pants and socks on. He was moaning in pain. I started crying. I called the restaurant and told them we were late and if I was going to mess up there schedule we would cancel. They said come on in. It took over an hour to get out of the house. I waffled the entire time. When we got there, I dropped James off at the door. Once his pain meds kicked in and the atmosphere of a restaurant we love kicked in, we were two, trouble-free lovers enjoying a romantic meal together. We had almost two hours where we forgot about his terminal cancer. I may do memoir and Backstory on this.I am happy you took time for a date. Belated Happy Birthday. I am happy you are in my cyber life.

This is so true. Sometimes reality needs to be checked at the door. I'm glad you enjoyed your date. But I think you deserve credit for putting the money in the rent envelope. I remember I got a clothing grant from Chicasaw Nation (my native American tribe) and my aunt made me put the money in for tuition. It's hard. But Happy Belated!!! & a late Happy Thanksgiving.Believe says,
Glad you got to enjoy a worry free birthday date. Nathaniel was wise in pulling it out of the envelope. Rent is important, but the two of you seem to find a way to pull the essentials out of the magic hat. But there is more to life than essentials. In fact, more times than not, life resides outside of the essentials. You became the you without worries and responsibilities for just a brief time. Nights like that are often quite magical. They invigorate us, allowing us to take a deep breath from the waterboarding we call life.DynamicDbytheC says,
I had some typos, We are NOT broke...and I forgot about the irony. James won a dinner in a bike race and went to dinner with a cane.
