"I thought the cops come first."
BackstoryTonight at dinner we witnessed a woman at the table next to us either have a heart attack or choke to the point where she was without oxygen and a pulse for an extended period of time. (She was fully alert and communicative by the time she left). After the paramedics left and she was taken to the hospital, we commented about how quickly the first responders arrived (within two minutes of the call being placed). We also compared how the fire truck arrived before the ambulance because they were coming from different places, while in our town they can arrive at the same time because they are located out of the same station.
My little brother, however, made a comment that shook me up a bit. He said that he thought that the cops always come first to assess the situation. He then blushed and looked back down at the table. He was remembering two summers ago when I was suicidal and a friend became concerned and called the police. I ended up leaving in an ambulance that night after not being able to convince the cop that I had not already ingested pills (which I had not).
I wonder in how many ways I’ve already scarred my brother?
