Umm to word ratio needs adjusting.

Backstory

Something I had to be aware of when giving speeches, especially during a Q&A.

Right now I'm watching C-SPAN but It happens on many news shows.

It's one of my pet peeves!

It's got to be better than "like" from the 80s, or "dude" from the 90s... ummmm, yes?

MotorCityMich,
not usually one of my pet peeves because I've had to sit through (and give) many an amateur speech. I would just appreciate a little more certainty from political "professionals".

K822, "dude" was the last word in this six but I had to cut it. I think I'm a "like" offender...I'm from silicon valley originally..so this gave me an extra giggle.

jl333 says,

There's a neighborhood lady, 22 years of age, and still uses the word 'like' 4 times in every sentence. It,like, totally like, drives me like crazy!
Dude, don't like be so harsh. From one California girl to another! :)

ba_miracle says,

Oh I don't want to "harsh your mellow" jl333

And I'm trying not to name names but the irony is too good to pass up...
He's not so much of an "um" as he is an "uh" but ...our presidential press secretary?

Not being party political...I swears it

Eloquence and presence are becoming a thing of the past. Those who are in positions to communicate are, in my opinion, often shamefully lacking...

Brilliant! Congrats!

Dragonflower says,

Reminds of an episode on How I Met Your Mother. Robin used the phrase, "but, um" so much during her on air interviews that the college students in Ted's class starting using it as a drinking game. Funny episode. I find I use "thing" a lot to describe stuff. Also "stuff".

ba_miracle says,

How I Met Your Mother is a thoroughly enjoyable show Autumn22 (glad to meet another imbiber ;-).

The Kings Speech came to mind. He required extra efforts in elocution and put forth the effort.
I may benefit from a little My Fair Lady training.

Thank you for the congrats!
