Leper digs: Sleeps six. Rent free.

Backstory

I visited Matala on the Greek island of Crete in the 1970s. Money being tight, we made ourselves at home in the caves (carved out of the sandstone cliffs) on the hillside. At first, I didn't realize that I was sleeping where people had been entombed during the Roman and Christian periods, although the hollowed out areas the length of a person, should have been my first clue.

The caves were also occupied in the middle ages by lepers. In the 1960s members of the counter culture, i.e., "hippies," including musicians Cat Stevens and Joni Mitchell. Joni commemorates her time there in the song, "Carey" when she mentions the Matala moon.

Can you imagine us "civilized" people living this way?

favepeep says,

I never felt uncivilized, just relaxed and happy. It was one of the best times of my life; washing up in the Ionian Sea, sleeping in caves, eating all our meals (cheese and tomato on fresh bed was a favorite) on the beach, seeing more stars than I'd seen before or since. Something to be said for simplicity...
