Doesn't the "backstory" defeat the purpose?

I like the backstories. It's the difference between reading the jacket cover and the novel.

I guess it can IF you want to take the memoir and fill in the blanks as a reader. Some people however, want the writer to do the filling in of the blanks.
I write back stories when I have a story to tell. I try not to just use backstory as a short explaination space.
