Educated by Mad magazine and Life.
Backstory
One may have had more of an effect on me than the other, I’m not certain yet, it depends on the moment I’m having when you ask.In the 8th grade I used to skip school frequently.
I would get some candy, soda and a magazine... Mad
(I think another funny one was called Cracked).
I’d sit on the hill, next to a tower overlooking the school, reading, smoking cigarettes and overdosing on sugar.
I’d know when it was time to go “home” of course when the last bell rang.
In retrospect, that was some relatively innocent trouble to be getting in.

Mad got me into trouble in school. As an art student, I was part of a group designing a mural for a school wall...an honor....but the characters I drew were vetoed for their less-than-traditional appearance. Can I help it I learned more about "art" from Mad than from my teacher?notjustagirlintheworld says,

My grandfather used to buy me Mad Magazine when I was a kid in the 60's, loved it. Of course, a lot of it was over my head, but loved it anyway and I love that he brought them to me. Life was the tome of our time, in time capsules everywhere, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing.canadafreeze says,
Love the memoir - my husband has a box of Mad Magazines that each of our kids have put secret dibs on ...ba_miracle says,
At least I'm in good company. It's been years since picking up the last one. There was a multi-play on the word "Life" one meaning being the Life section of six-words. Still trying to catch up on reading all of you:-)ctgoods2 says,

I remember going to the drug store to buy cmic books and sneaking peeks at Mad magazine, which was banned by my mom.ba_miracle says,
One of my favorite parts was folding the cover to reveal the hidden picture.zsuzsa says,
Ah! Thanks for this. Mad mag gave me formative training in puns and satire. Used to love those little bottom-of-page cartoons and jokes which were totally unrelated to the rest of the feature. Spent more time reading Mad than doing homework.ba_miracle says,

Yeah. That cool satire really put the '60's cold war in perspective for kids!ba_miracle says,
