Backstory
I've never understood that idiom because most of the pies I've made weren't really all that easy. Of course, there are the Mrs. Smith's things that you take out of the freezer and pop in the oven, but c'mon, what about a REAL pumpkin pie, or a truly good apple pie, or a custard pie? Not so easy. So basically, I guess someone who says "easy as pie" means that something is kinda complicated, but as long as you take the time to read the recipe and do it right, it turns out okay... most of the time.

The crust is the hardest part to make. The rest is relatively easy. I usually make apple pie.Dean6805 says,
MJ, I've never claimed to have great facility in the kitchen, so maybe pie really IS easy. If that's the case, please excuse a completely egocentric memoir.Dhani says,
(Memoir) One ex-lover was an African-American painter & poet from Harlem. We lived together for 11 years, so I can now make 4 different kinds of SWEET POTATO PIE (Don't ask for the recipes, please!): Sweet potato pie natural, orange-flavored, with coconut or with crushed pecans.Dhani says,
And yes, they are as 'easy as pie' to make. (When you make something to eat WITH LOVE, it's always easy!)Dhani says,

My friend told me that I could go into Publix and buy a ready made Crust in the freezer department. Somehow I feel that is cheating but I will tell you Dean, the crust is really hard to get it right. Once that is done just add the chopped up apples and the rest and put the top crust on and bake. I curse a lot when I roll the dough out. Cover your ears everyone.Dean6805 says,
Let it fly, MJ. The coarse language makes the crust just crusty enough.accidentaltourist says,
I think your analysis is perfect....but I make a mean apple pie without even thinking, even the crust from scratch, so....hmmm....maybe it means, "once you do it enough times, it becomes second nature...therefore, easy."accidentaltourist says,
Oh crap, does that mean Dhani was right??Dean6805 says,
I can agree with the part about making something with love.JAD says,
You guys making my mouth water. Apple pie my favorite.jl333 says,
This is why I prefer 'piece of cake'Dean6805 says,
I like that one, JL. I can actually still remember where I heard "piece of cake" for the first time ever. It was on TV, an old show about lifeguards - this is waaaay before Baywatch. I think it was called "Code Red." One of the dashing guys said it about some ridiculous rescue he had to perform. He grinned a Hollywood-perfect smile and said "piece of cake." Badass.Believe says,
My eight year old makes pies. Pies are easy, but you are right, the secret is in the crust. The recipe that she uses has vodka in it. We both swear that that is the magic trick for easy pie making. (Do not contact cps, it all goes in the crust) Also, try rolling the dough out on a silpat. Works beautifully. I will share the vodka piecrust recipe, just shoot mean email.

When in doubt, I make pies. Ever see the movie "waitress"? That's how I make pies ... :-)TheAngstyPoet says,
This is a really cute and intriguing memoir. Good job, dean!Dean6805 says,
Thanks, TAP.NumbrOneAunt says,
my sister gave me a recipe for peach cobbler (cobbler crust is easier than pie crust); from there i substituted apples as the filling to make apple cobbler. then i thought, "WAIT a minute - apple cobbler with peanut butter cookie topping! LIGHT BULB OVER HEAD! made the apple cobbler filling, made the peanut butter cookie dough and put it on top - gotta say, it does not stink!AQScott says,
Love making pumpkin pie from scratch, especially on Thanksgiving morning while watching the Macy's Parade (a family tradition)...the crust can be tricky, but I agree with AT that the more you DO it (she'll like that!)... But the easiest pie to make, in my opinion, is Key Lime...again, homemade graham and pecan crust and the recipe on the "Nellie & Joe's" key lime juice bottle! Bon Apetit!Oh wait...no one's mentioned MUD pies...remember those? Perhaps THEY are the easiest of all!
accidentaltourist says,
You are right AQ, I DO like that. ;) I am a firm believer in "the more you do it..."canadafreeze says,
With all this talk and Saskatoon berries in the freezer ... a perfect afternoon distraction:-)accidentaltourist says,
I'm going apple crisp...easier than pie. ;)HopeInPain says,
Coming from the perspective of someone who has only been able to eat and not make pies (they're a bit too complicated for me and I'm a bit of a klutz) I always interpreted it more as pie being easy to eat. There is no verb in the idiom to know what one is doing with the pie.Believe says,
HopeInPain: brilliant observation.lovelylizard says,
What the hell is a Saskatoon berry?jl333 says,
All of this pie talk is making me hungry. I'm going to go have a piece of cake.Dean6805 says,
HopeInPain, you do make a good point.treehugger says,

Thanks, Daveat61 and DDC.ba_miracle says,
Dean6805, your six is exactly how I felt about the saying.HopeInPain, "eating pie" (especially after reading all these comments about yummy pies) that sounds doable.
