They never truly go away. I have a couple who reappear on occasion. To answer your question, because the mind does not forget. Oh, the conscious mind may, but the subconscious does not. If you shared significant emotional moments with that person, that memory is still tucked away only to be revealed by some waking trigger. There is no denying the past. It will always reassert itself in some form or another.
L1, that's part of it, but I believe dreams are our subconscious trying to sort things out and there's a deeper message, some of which I've deciphered, but some of it is still shrouded. The only dreams I remember are the ones from early morning.
