It it tricky. Some people get scared and abandon you. Some say the wrong thing. I suggest that you just show up and let the person dying lead the way. Don't try to say, do or be anything. Just offer to stop by or meet for coffee (depending on how sick they are at this point). Just stop by and visit and talk about normal things. If the person wants to talk about their illness, feelings, whatever, they will. No platitudes or suggestions. Just be there.
