Backstory
I come out as a gay man in 1986, two years later, July 5th, 1988, I sat my parents down and come out to them. So, I remember that day as the first one of living truly authentically. PS: They had already figured it out and were totally accepting from the start.

Great memoir!Dean6805 says,
Good stuff, Tawny. And good on your parents for being supportive and loving YOU, not the person whom they wanted you to be.accidentaltourist says,
I love this. I have a nephew struggling with his sexuality at age 13. He has told his parents, and to their credit, they have given him nothing but love and support as he finds and grows into himself.Steve__Anthony says,
Tawny, I'm very happy for you. :o)TawnyPort says,
Thanks everybody. I am just glad I can get up each day and just be me without fear or apology.Accidental, that is great news about your nephew. Kudos to all of them for working through his teen years supportively together. I can't imagine doing such a thing when I was his age.

A lovely story. Interesting that your parents already figured it out. Goes to the old adage,"Who you are speaks so loudly I can't hear what you're saying."

Yes, as I went around telling friends and family I was gay, the usual response was, " I already knew that. I was just waiting for you to find out." I love that quote DDbytheC.notjustagirlintheworld says,

Thanks again everyone! I remember that conversation with my parents 24 years ago like it was yesterday. I am a very fortunate gay man blessed with wonderful family and friends who have become my family. I am thankful to have the Smith family to commemorate this special day with me.Tenacious_Badger11 says,
TawnyPort, this is one of the best six word memoirs I've seen. Congratulations on not only being brave, but for the feature! Happy 5th of July!TawnyPort says,

Congrats on memoir of the day!Wench says,
It's encouraging to read something like this. Several people I have known since I was a kid have started coming out recently to friends but are having a hard time with their family. I feel so sad for them.TawnyPort says,
What drove me forward in telling my parents was the belief that ultimately parents want their children to be happy. In my case that proved to be true. I wish the same for anyone else wishing to live an authentic life.AQScott says,
Happy Independence Day, Tawny! My parents found it difficult to accept my brother's coming out...I was 10 and had no problem with it. My teen daughters have many gay friends. I pray that this is a non-issue for the next generation.Level1 says,
My step son came out last Thanksgiving to the family, We were all, like, okay - so we can stop holding our breath now! We already knew and were just waiting for him to tell us. We were happy because now he can just be himself.TawnyPort says,
Thanks AQ. I am happy that your daughter's generation has a much more mature attitude about accepting people for who they are..period.I am happy for your step son Level1, and your unquestioning acceptance of him. Coming out is never quite finished and always a bit of a calculated risk, so being met with acceptance is such a relief each time it occurs.
