Not so sweet since diabetes diagnosis.

Backstory

Hearing this somewhat surprising news pissed me off royally. Even though it runs in my family I thought I was immune, based on magical thinking I guess, but also on the fact that I wasn't overweight, ate fairly well and exercised regularly.

The good news is that after three months, I've made enough changes without medication that my numbers are fantastic. Seems I wasn't really eating all that well, I wasn't getting my heart rate up enough when I exercised and I was overweight for me, even though most people thought I was fine.

And I feel better now! I never realized the number of problems this disease was creating. But I'm still pissed every time I have to pass on the pasta.

congrats, getting old(er) sucks.

Knoxena says,

These are the golden years. They take the gold from our teeth to pay the medical bills.

catsmeow says,

You have teeth left, Knox??? ;-)

BanjoDan says,

Thanks for sharing and congrats on not giving in

JAD says,

This disease, such an epidemic attacking so many children as well. One thing I've learned you don't have to be overweight to get it. Remember how skinny Mary Tyler Moore was and still is when she was first diagnosed?

catsmeow says,

I think she has Type 1 diabetes, which is actually a quite different disease and often causes weight loss. Type 2, which I have, is no longer for just the obese, thanks to the junk food diet many of us adopted. Growing up, I ate boxed cereal every morning and drank Coke a couple of times a day. Gave it up long ago but it took its toll, along with the rice and bread and pasta that I thought were ok.

Amapola says,

I hope you keep taking good care of yourself and being strong against nasty food temptations. I heard that weight lifting is a good exercise, as strong muscles have more capacity to break down the sugars, so that is a good add-on to cardiovascular exercise.

My dad is 77 and diabetic, and both my maternal grandparents had it too. Your memoir makes me aware that I should have a check-up soon...

catsmeow says,

Thx, Ama. I'm a big advocate of getting blood sugar tested... now. I'm working on improving both my lean muscle mass and getting my heart rate up there when I exercise. And for the most part, I'm enjoying my food more now. I love veggies!
