His graduation, more important than college.

Backstory

My boy should have been wearing a mortarboard this month, but he's not. Had he stayed in college, he'd be lined up in cap and gown, his proud parents taking pictures and crying. Instead, he went through rehab. He's moved out of a "clean house" and into an apartment. He's working a full time job at a company he loves and just got a promotion. He's re-enrolling in school to finish his degree. He calls just to tell me he loves me, and that he never could have done it without my love, faith and support. There's no cap and gown, but I am still crying and I'm so very, very proud.

Believe says,

A wonderful story of a boy, written by his hero.

ba_miracle says,

Such a beautiful mom story! You better get some type of supportive apparel to keep you from bursting wide open with pride. Yes I'm a corndog for stories of sobriety.

marymc says,

I am beyond humbled by all your support and this recognition. It wasn't an easy weekend, spending yesterday at my university's graduation, congratulating my students and meeting their parents. Today with my husband's mother and his children. There are times where you all are the closest family I have. This is one of those times.

JAD says,

Had you not been there for him through thick and thin, might have been different story. Good luck!

L2L3 says,

Don't overlook blessings just because they come in clever disguises:-)

marymc says,

Wise words, L2.

sisterpoet says,

Mary, G-d bless you and your son. He is blessed to have a mother who gets it. With your unconditional love, he can soar.
I have a similar feeling this June. While all my "friends" in this town are talking about where their kids are going to college, where they are shopping for dorm stuff ect ect....I am preparing to send my son off to boot camp. Some look down on me as though both he and I failed: we are not marching to the beat of the expected drummer. Success is a matter of perspective, and you have a perfect perspective!

canadafreeze says,

Lucky boy to have you for a mom.

marymc says,

Thank you so much, sister and freeze. Kind words, much appreciated. And sister, thank your son for his service for me please. And give him a hug.

LucidDreamer says,

marymc says,

Thank you Lucid. I am so lucky.

DynamicDbytheC says,

I would never have guessed that you were going through such an ordeal. How timely that this should be featured the week of Mother's Day. I know that these type of struggles are ongoing. I wish the best for you and your family. Thank you, as always, for your frank honesty and wit.

Level1 says,

This is better than and more meaningful than any old cap and gown ceremony. Keep up the good work Mary. It sounds like you have been a terrific mom to your son :-)

oopsalittle says,

a truly moving achievement - (who needs a cap and gown?!)
