Gunny says,

I am an American of Mexican heritage... Been a trailblazer all my life.... although I never set out to do just that. In the turbulent 70's when our city was all about Mexicans vs Whites vs Blacks.... I was a part of the Brown Berets we weren't militant we were just fighting for our rights against police brutality. In 1978 I joined the Marine Corps when they needed women to join the ranks... while in the USMC I was part of a pilot program... it was a Combat Conditioning Program to test and see if women really could fight alongside the male Marines... we passed (there were 4 of us) with flying colors... it was implemented into Marine Corps women’s bootcamp. I retired from the Corps after 20 years 6 months with the rank of Gunnery Sergeant hence the nickname "the Gunny". I went to work for the Sheriff of Lubbock County as his executive assistant/special projects officer/asst emergency management coordinator for the county and became the first woman ever on the Sheriff's Honor Guard. Left the Sheriff's Office after 5 years and went to work for A&M University Systems under their program - Emergency Services Training Institute as a Weapons of Mass Destruction Instructor again first woman on the program we traveled around the U.S. and Italy and taught EM firefighters city managers police officers federal employees etc how to "identify and respond to WMD". I left A&M and went to work for the Texas Department of Public Safety as a Regional Liaison Officer our job was to gather at DPS main headquarters in the disaster area (manmade or natural disasters) and oversee the response and recovery of operations... I was 1 of 5 women ever to hold this position. So you see I consider myself a trailblazer and because of these opportunities I have made a difference in many areas both personal and professional I have opened doors for woman in fields woman had never served before I became a mentor for many of young kids and relatives who never thought they could join the Marines I was part of a team that helped put people’s lives back together I worked floods hurricanes tornados and countless other smaller disasters.
Looking back I guess I have spent most of my life being a Trailblazer and by doing that I helped people to realize their potential thereby making a difference. I’ve always thought that if each one of us took the time to make difference then we could all be part of the “Greater Good” making this world a better place. My life in 6 words: TRAILBLAZER made a difference MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Thank you for the oppportunity to take a look back at my life. God Bless.
