MMK says,

I teach the Declaration of Independence each year to my fifth graders. I help them understand it by studying the format of what I call the best break - up letter of all time.

Anyone can follow the format and insert their own details.

Below is the basic break - up outline as planned by Thomas Jefferson, may you have the wisdom of our forefathers when you really need it.

1. Statement of purpose: When someone wants to separate from another you should announce that you are doing this and why.

2. List all the things the person has done wrong. (In the case of Thomas Jefferson et al, there were 27 specific offenses committed by King George)

3. STate all of the things you did to make it work, and how they were ignored.

4. Pronounce that you are officially free from all ties of the person you are breaking up with.

Happy Independence Day!
