Coming from a teacher, I hope you share your thoughts with your teachers. Those simply stated six words could shine a light on an entire day... or more.
Thank you for posting!
Congratulations om MOTD! I also encourage you to reach out to any teacher who impacted you. There is a lot of teacher bashing going on and many of us could use a little reminder of what matters: THE STUDENTS. For many of us, that is why we elected to get into this profession, not for summers off or great benefits and pensions but to matter. Tell him/her they indeed did matter!
In the author notes at the end of my novel, I namelessly mention the teacher who let me get away with that. With deep gratitude, I also pay homage to the teacher who taught me more about writing than any other. These are the two specific paragraphs:
In junior high, I proved I could work in the fiction realm by earning an A for a book report on a book that did not exist. My appreciation for that teacher’s evaluation of the work will be to allow her to remain nameless.
Another thank you is due to Dorothy Tooke, the tiny little lady who was my teacher for Senior English and Journalism in my senior year at Broadmoor High School in Baton Rouge. Beowulf and such did not ring my chime at the time, but I learned more about writing in her Journalism class than at any other time in my life. I think she might take me to task for becoming the wordy writer I am, as she was a stickler for journalistic economy. But hey, I no longer need to conserve space for ads. I think of Dottie often as I compose and polish and reword and hone my work to make it as interesting as she would demand.
I finished up that author note like this:
Spank me, Dottie. I’ve assembled too many words once again.
Dorothy Tooke was aware of my appreciation of the gift she gave to me. I wish she had lived to see my book and its author note. Bless her heart.
The writing abilities she cultivated enabled me to break into banking management. Now, as I approach retirement, they are taking me to the places of my dreams.
Crystal, it means so much to me that you wrote this, but also that you are WRITING and taking such ownership over your work, and are now being recognized for it. That is the power of writing for an audience. I am so proud of you! I shared this with all of my friends and blog readers, and I saved a screenshot of this memoir so I can frame it. Keep writing!
Ms.Thompson, Thanks for being the coolest Student teacher ever! I dont even think you understand how much you and Ms.Reiter have impacted my life, in such positive ways. Thanks for showing me this website and posting that on YOUR website. I FELT AWESOME being on the internet. My mom is very proud of me, I get the giggles everytime I think about it. (: Thanks again Ms.Thompson! I will see you tomorrow during 2nd period, Bright and Early!
these six words leapt out from the sermon I heard in church this morning. Thanks Pastor Jodi. (I attend a Baptist church which has two lady ministers on the pastoral team.)We can live with peace and joy no matter...

Here's how I discovered that I could make fiction work for me:http://www.smithmag.net/sixwords/story.php?did=188335
