She told her story. We cried.

Backstory

People often tell me their stories. Even people I don't know. So I wasn't surprised when the gal behind the counter started telling me about her Mom, after I made a brief comment about Relay for Life.

The talkers far outweigh the listeners in this world, bearing witness to some one else's story is a gift

I agree with njagithw. We are here to bear witness and it is a gift to be able to let someone put down their load for at least a short time. Sometimes just saying things out loud diminishes their power over us. It's important for everyone to know that they are not alone. I also have inherited my mother's pep talk gene, which is also a gift. It costs us nothing, except a little time, to show an interest in someone and it could be a game changer for them. We'll never know how many lives have been helped by our generosity.
