Recently a student cited wikipedia as a viable source in a writing assignment about why teachers don't allow students to cite wikipedia as a viable source.

Thank goodness for wise, patient and caring teachers such as yourselves. At least you have a sense of humor. I would be shaking my head all day. Great memoir and thanks for sharing!

That's hilarious but not unexpected. I remember when students (I worked in academia) would type in 20 or more words to search for info on their topics. And they'd never heard of the concept of Boolean logic. I remember it from set theory that I learned in 3rd or 4th grade, but I digress. And keywords? Fugetaboutit!

Then later I needed to explain to them that everything on the Internet isn't factual as well as enlightening them that much of recorded history isn't and never will be digitized. For example, in 2011 Google estimated that 129,864,880 different books existed in the world, and it claimed to have digitized 15 million of them—or about 12 percent. I could go on, but what students and people in general don't know about what info is online and how to find good information (and when to just walk over to a book) is a travesty. And I'm still not convinced that the majority of people, adults and children, know the most efficient and expedient ways to find what they need.

FUN-KNEE-AS-HELL! Thank you for my only laugh today.

ErikaStellar says,

Thanks everyone and your welcome for the laugh! :)

I love the comments from other teachers with similar experiences. I find that about 5% of teaching is planned while 95% of teaching is maintaining sanity. Never ever a dull moment when your job is to transfer knowledge, information, and skills from your head to another head.

Also, it wasn't but a day after I submitted this entry that I watched a student google Google on Bing. But I thought submitting that would just be too much.

Another great six, here. "Teaching, 5% teaching, 95% maintaining sanity."

Good goofy giggle, girl!
