My sister was there. She works on that campus. Walked into the chaotic aftermath but missed the incident and is home safe and sound. As she points out, if everyone had been carrying guns around on campus (per the NRA recommendation), how would you know who the "bad guys" were?
I don't believe they're blind to suffering but I do believe they are blind to logic. Having said that, I withdraw from the fray. I know it's a strongly felt issue on both sides.
There must be a solution that doesn't introduce more guns into more places. Oddly enough I associate our national gun policy with our national policy on sex education. We have too many guns in the wrong hands and too many unwanted children being born to dispassionate parents. Our society is seemingly incapable of self regulation. Logic is not a political currency. As long as important social issues are guided by emotion, superstition, or luck, we will evolve at the whims of fate. The only first step is dialogue directed towards a solution based on people's real needs. I don't think withdrawing from the fray defuses an explosive situation. How do We learn how to trust ourselves and each other.
At the hight of the Vietnam war I began to look at the cost analysis of killing the enemies. It occurred to me that it would cost less to drop money from B-52's than bombs. The enemy would be so busy running arround picking up money, that would forget about killing us. Lives need meaning to survive. Young people need to have a reason to want to grow up. We need a national dream, beyond commercial, sexual, or adrenal.
RbW, I won't withdraw from the fray, just keeping it away from my Sixes, as much as I can manage. I recently read an article that encouraged gun control supporters to actively engage in discussions with NRA supporters wherever they can and to challenge their assumptions in a gentle, persistent and factual way. I see the merit of that approach but I'm not there yet.
Anybody know the stats on gun crime? It occurs most often in large cities, done by minorities most often drug related. Take Chicago, in the state our Pres represented, 80% of its staggering # of murders are drug related. So since the drug ban works so well, obviously a gun ban should really do the trick.
It’s a sad, all too familiar story: harsh, distant, alcoholic father, sensitive, shy daughter always seeking his love and approval. Although there were flashes of kindness, most of my dad’s feelings had been buried long before. Even as...

It is unfortunate that gun advocates are so blind to suffering. We are the most heavily armed country on earth.catsmeow says,
