It's amazing, the things I hear people say. In my ASL classes, I still have the occasional person use the term "deaf-mutes." When they do, I politely correct them and then offer to bring in one of my Deaf friends so they can see just how clearly (and loudly) a Deaf person can shout. :D
I absolutely agree with you, the handicap I refered to in a lighthearted memoir is the sporting term from golf. I don't consider my disabilities, handicaps. Even if they affect my score.
