Today, time's taking up the slack.

Backstory

Retirement. More time. More money. Supposedly, more opportunities to see the world. There are also more aches, more pains, and certain windows begin to close. Not much slack in the lifeline. Realizing how perfect and precious each day is, regardless of its supposed purpose, is a gift of aging. Perhaps, wisdom is the prize we get for not having those things in abundance when we were young. Is youth really wasted on the young? I don't think so ... I needed my youth to make up the difference when there was too little time, too little money, and greater obligations. And today's only Monday ...

Dragonflower says,

Lovely backstory. I have been trying to come to grips with the windows closing aspect of aging. I don't mean that in a negative, giving up kind of way. Just the realization and acceptance that I don't have to do anything I don't really want to anymore. For example, I have absolutely no desire to travel. I did some when I was younger, but feel that window is now closed (by me). And yet, with all this free time I have, shouldn't I want to travel, see things, meet people? That's my unease in my newly retired state. All the "shoulds" of retirement vs the "what I want". "I" being underscored, italicized, and asterisked.

The truth is, I love all my free time with nothing pressing on me. I had a busy life, lots of obligations, demands on me. I think this year I will finally get at peace with my new, slower life. This year I will finally get that no one is going to ask me for an evaluation of accomplishments.

I am so grateful to this Smith community to be able to think and explore all these thoughts. They used to just swirl around in my head! Thank you for this memoir.
