In Love Actually, they are listening to Joni Mitchell while they wrap presents, and the husband asks, "What is this we're listening to??" Later the gift of a new Joni Mitchell CD causes her heart to break because she thought it was going to be a necklace.
I must admit that this movie and the comments about the music in the special features section made me like her for the first time.
So I should preface this with the fact that I am not exactly a Joni Mitchell fan myself.
That being said, Both Sides Now I one of my favorite songs. I have known the older version for as long as I can remember, but stumbled upon the newer version a few years back. I listened to them repeatedly and was mesmerized by the magic of the song. I believe that the young Joni Mitchell had never seen "both sides" when she released the song originally. The song was wiser than the artist. The listener can hear this in the tone and phrasing that she did in the original recording. It sounds almost childish when listened to beside the newer version. In listening to the tone, the pauses, the inflection of the newer version the listener realizes quickly that the artist has learned of the song she sang so many years ago.
As a music teacher, I use this song to show children and young adults the difference that honesty makes in musical performance.
But personally I love this song because of its gentle honesty. It speaks of those lessons that we learn that sometimes we wish we didn't have to.
Yes, Believe! this is exactly what was said on the DVD special features. that her voice on the newer version showed she had learned the lessons in the song. it's what made me like it- it did feel honest and it was the perfect song for that part of the movie where she is heartbroken. music teachers and music directors know these things and explain it so well. both sides now was the song in love actually. I am going to watch it again!
Huge Mitchell fan with Blue as my favorite album, so I'm on the wrong side of the fence here, but you gave me a lopsided grin Steve, as my husband is Mitchell deaf. Thanks : )
Carole King is sort of like Joni Mitchell, isn't she?? What's the diff? If I'm remembering right, James Taylor sang some of CK songs; if I'm right, then maybe that helps you like her since a man sang her songs. You know, man-ed them up a bit. !!
But,yeah, I agree with L2L3, and maybe you shouldn't say these things out loud anywhere.
Well, this has been a nice discussion. It made me watch Love Actually again before I put it away for next December. And I learned that Believe is a music teacher, and Steve_Anthony isn't the sharpest cheese...that's a funny memoir.
I watched Love Actually for the first time last night. That was a WONDERFUL film! Excellent cast, and intriguing storyline -- I like that there is complexity instead of just catharsis at the end. The use of Joni Mitchell in that film has to make her a little likable, Steve_Anthony.
these six words leapt out from the sermon I heard in church this morning. Thanks Pastor Jodi. (I attend a Baptist church which has two lady ministers on the pastoral team.)We can live with peace and joy no matter...

I admit she is a favourite of mine, but it's a good thing we don't all like the same things:-) the world would be a boring place...lovelylizard says,
Shocking! Joni is both a consumate songwriter as well as a unique voice of a certain time. But then again, I'm no Midler fan, so go figure.Dragonflower says,

opps....In You've Got Mail, Tom Hanks is disdainful about Joni Mitchell also. He tells Meg Ryan he could never like anyone who liked Joni Mitchell.
So there must be something about her that just isn't a lot of people's cup of tea--at least in the movies!

Hmmm. ---- Maybe I'm just too-o-oo-o manly for Mitchell.----- Then again maybe Joni doesn't like me either.

Carole King is so much more pop and commerical. Joni's a lot more bluesy - more initimate - darker - writes with depth.I'm a very, very, very, very shallow person. I like formula - structure - simple wisdom.

Yes, Cats as I once wrote "Not sharpest cheese at Fondue party."I am as thick as a brick and as shallow as a rug.
