As for good 'ol Honest Abe . . . he surely had a healthy relationship with himself – possible depression notwithstanding – in that he so easily joked about his appearance. In one tale – apparently true – he recalled as a young man encountering a stranger on a sidewalk, who suddenly bellowed that he was going to shoot Lincoln, because he had long ago promised that if he ever saw a man who was uglier than himself, he would kill him on the spot. Lincoln said he studied the man carefully for a while, then thrust his hands into the air and said, "Mister, if I'm uglier than YOU are, fire away! Put me out of my misery." Gotta love Abe.
