Yesterday and today, my husband had a class to re-certify as an ambulance driver. This morning, shortly after he got up to get in the shower, I also came upstairs. This is the first interaction I had.
Mom - "Alexis, I've been looking for two missing travel mugs. I don't like you taking things and not returning them, if you use a dish, wash it and put it back."
"I sent Nathaniel with a mug yesterday, it was the one without a handle in that cabinet. He said he brought it in, I'm not sure where it is, I'll get it."
"That's not the one I'm missing, I'm missing two others. So I'd appreciate if you didn't leave them around."
"We haven't used any other travel mugs, that's the only one we've used and yesterday was the first time we used it."
"Maybe."
"No... we have not used any other travel mugs."
"Well, Nathaniel could have."
"I am the only one who makes coffee and I have only ever put it in the regular mugs. We have never used your travel mugs, I don't know where they are."
I went to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, and while I was in there, asked Nathaniel where the mug and tupperware container from yesterday were. When I came out, my mom said, "I don't think you needed to bring the mugs up with him."
"I didn't. I just asked where the one he used was, so I can wash it."
"You have hours to do that, won't he be gone all day?"
"Yes, but I'm going to church." (This is the same mom that made me clean the kitchen at 1:30 am, suddenly telling me to wait to wash something)
"I really don't think you needed to mention it."
"I didn't mention your missing mugs, I need to wash the dishes he used, primarily so that I can make him another mug of coffee to send with him today."
"He can do that. That takes twenty seconds. Your baby is wondering where you are." (Constantine was awake, pleasantly talking to himself downstairs)
"Yeah, well, I'm his wife. And I help him. Is that a problem?"
"When does he need to leave?"
"Two minutes."
"Two minutes??"
"...As soon as he is able."
"What are you going to put in there that will be ready in two minutes, anyway?"
"Well... we drink instant coffee... so... instant coffee."
"Fine. I'll put on water for you, since you don't have anything boiling yet."
"Thanks."
"I don't think you need to speak to Nathaniel about any of this."
I didn't. Not before he left for his test, anyway because I didn't want to stress him out. But I did tell him later, because I find it grossly inappropriate for her to tell me what i can and cannot say to my spouse.
After his test, he met me at church and we came home together. As I walked in the door, my mom called me over and said that she'd found the mugs. Awesome.
these six words leapt out from the sermon I heard in church this morning. Thanks Pastor Jodi. (I attend a Baptist church which has two lady ministers on the pastoral team.)We can live with peace and joy no matter...
