"No, you can't read in here."

Backstory

My daughter, a senior, took a written test in her Music class. She and another girl were the first to finish. They quietly turned their tests into the teacher. Independently, they returned to their desks and took out "Catch 22" which they are reading for an AP Literature class and started reading silently. The teacher looked up a couple minutes later and told them to put their books away and just sit. They spent the next 30 minutes staring at the walls and into space while the rest of the class was allowed to finish their test.

Yet another flaw in our school system.

Of course, catch 22. This is an unfortunate case of lack of crab apples. Few are prepared to defend themselves from authority figures. Presicely the reason no one should never leave home without crap apples Orr at least horse chestnuts. Never finish an exam early. Always beg for more time. And breaking your pencil is worth 5 points.

Staraj says,

Is THINKING allowed in this class?

accidentaltourist says,

Probably no writing either.

tcrog1020 says,

Anyone who wants to read is obviously a subversive and in need of a stint in a re-education camp. Oh no, they may have to read there as well, what to do ? see FM 3-39.40 online

L2L3 says,

But that teacher probably has tenure.

lillybrook says,

That is awful. Why can't they read? It's like they were being punished for being studious.

MO_Thoughts2 says,

My daughter says this teacher has a bit of an attitude. She said he recently ranted how how his class was as important as any math or language class and how he felt like kids considered this class an "easy A blow off class" and it wasn't "study hall". On the flip side, when he is preparing for an choir concert, he hands out a single worksheet which takes a couple minutes to do then lets them listen to music on their phones / tablets with their earbuds. But no other classwork can be done. Strange !
