Mom is missed; pumpkin pies persist.
BackstoryMy mother made pumpkin chiffon (think marshmallows in the filling) pie for several years before she died at age 52. My sister and I continued the tradition, getting together nearly every Thanksgiving for the past 27 years to make mom’s recipe. This year, my sister is away visiting friends.
Wanting company and knowing she’s the perfect age to help out in the kitchen, I asked my 5-year old niece to come over to make grandma Tina’s pie with me. We had a lot of fun--carefully adding the spices, stirring the ingredients and eating the occasional marshmallow. And the pies turned out just right!
My niece never met her grandmother, but today, my mom was a part of her life. I was so happy…and so sad.
