Backstory

With all the intrigue and interest in the Petraeus affair, much of it comes down to the use of email. When will we learn that once you put it out there in the cyber world, it never goes away. So, if we don't want our secrets discovered ...

A letter still leaves a paper trail. How about telling them, making sure the phone isn't tapped or they aren't wired beforetime. The earth has become a decidely non-private planet. Unless.....you go for the cone of silence like Maxwell Smart.

CF, this reminds me that a very long time ago someone told me, "you should never put anything in an email that you wouldn't write on a post card." but i also think that the whole idea of privacy is changing...couples have arguments and then each one posts their side on facebook looking for people to support them...just seems like the whole category known as "nobody else's business" is shrinking exponentially.

MotorCityMich says,

Or.... don't do stuff you shouldn't be caught doing and wouldn't be embarrassed to have others see.

NumbrOneAunt says,

MCM's comment reminds me of a will rogers quote: "live your life so you wouldn't be afraid to sell the family parrot to the town gossip."

I love the Will Rogers quote. I still believe there is something to be said in favour of the written letter. It is between two people, and can, however unlikely, be burned after reading. Emails exist in the ether forever ...

Staraj says,

Gotta love Will. He's my homeboy. And one of the all-time great truth tellers. As for letters . . . the paper trail they leave can mark the path to forgotten memories. Our own or those of loved ones we discover by happenstance. Ever open an old trunk and find letters written by a grandparent? Messages you could never imagine "deleting". Surely, some handwritten letters are more than messages – they're treasures. Which can live in our hearts forever. As Sam Cooke might say, "They send me".

canadafreeze says,

Nice, staraj:-) I feel the same way about letters. They're precious tangibles ...
