Last year, bicycle. Yesterday, a cane.

Backstory

James has always been a gifted and talented athlete. Breathtaking at times. Last year, despite serious pain in his tailbone from cancer, he was back to riding, 20 to 25 miles with a seriously intimidating climb (hill). Prior to that, I don't think he would have bothered to ride if it was under 50 miles. His pain was so severe that he used a mountain bike with big tires and took out about half of the air out of the tires so that it would be a soft, cushion-like ride. Sure it slowed him down, but his passion and desire to ride again were huge. Here is a guy who really appreciated and took advantage of what a body could do. We thought his intense pain was from the damage from the radiation and chemo and would improve. Damn that hope thing. It was the cancer growing in his tailbone and spine and he eventually stopped riding and now walking is even difficult. Yesterday, he had to start using a cane.

canadafreeze says,

Amazing man - I'm happy you are in his life and he in yours. Sheer, unconditional love comes through your memoirs. I'm so sorry you have been given so many conditions to overcome. You are an inspiration, DD.

Believe says,

At least canes are sexy. (proven by Gregory House) ;)

I'm constantly impressed by the both of you.

Dhani says,

My heart goes out here, cuz I've been exactly there!...and back! Biking & jogging one month, struggling to walk on cobblestone streets bent-over with a cane like an old man when that cancerous tumor struck my tailbone. NOW, I'm jogging, biking, kicking up some dust...thank you, thank you God!

BanjoDan says,

I am sure neither one of you will ever give up!

jl333 says,

I can truly feel your pain DD. You've also just created the perfect sixer with one line in your backstory. I added a word...
"Damn that thing they call hope". You should post it, because it's an awesome memoir and gives us readers a sense of your disappointment.

I am on the other side of the unknown. There are lots of "ifs"...wheel chairs and canes are perhaps a just a matter of time thing for someone in my life. I want to take it with as much grace and strength as you. g-d bless you both.

Wench says,

We love you both.

treehugger says,

DynamicD, the courage shown in your memoirs is awe-inspiring. You are an inspiration to many on this site. I only wish I could handle the trivial frustrations in my life with as much grace as you handle the biggest challenges known to man.

LucidDreamer says,

You both impress the hell out of me....seriously. Your circumstances suck, but you guys rock -

lillybrook says,

I agree with Believe -- canes ARE sexy. Your husband's strength -- on a bike or with walking support -- is an inspiration.

Steve__Anthony says,

I haven’t posted very much this week. In fact, I’ve tried to stay away, because when I first read this story, it torn into me somehow. But as the days passed, this story has haunted me.

It’s brilliant. It’s sad. But all along, it’s life and courage. I have never had a six-word story touch me this way.

As everyone knows by now, it’s never been like me to say or write the right thing. But have to say that you are bigger than life. You are so damn humanly heroic.

This story. Your story. His story. I have never imagined or known someone with the unconditional-ness or power of your love. I just want you to know that both of you are in my thoughts, my hopes and prayers.

DynamicDbytheC says,

"You are so damn humanly heroic." Saying and writing the right thing is what you just did. My favorite six was just coined by you, Steve. Human yes. Heroic, occasionally. Powerful love, yes. Thanks everyone for such kind comments.

must be getting old... sucks!
