“I Pulled off the Perfect Proposal” —And More Six-Word Memoirs from 92YTribeca

By Larry Smith

Our first event in the 2011 Six-Word Memoir Story Slam series was hot: 11 performers (including two with guitars), 150 people (including many of you who shared a Six-Word Memoir during the audience “slam” part), and an evening in which stories of teenage semen situations and breast cancer battles were each, in their own way, heartwarming.

Pictured below are the folks who made Valentine’s Day 2011 truly memorable: Qraig de Groot (Facebook winner for “Heart united us. Band not organ.”), Larry Smith (”Hitchhiked to delivery room: blizzard boy!”), Rachel Fershleiser (”I finally threw away his toothbrush”), Darin Strauss (”Kinda lost my virginity; kinda didn’t.”), Elizabeth Wurtzel (”My heart is without a compass.”), Sara Barron (”Third grade was instructive, sexually speaking.”), Rachel Sklar (”Breast Cancer: A Love Story—Really.”), Michele Carlo (“He became a Goth. I didn’t.”), Ashley Van Buren (”Many incarnations; so much to do.”), Molly Schulman (Galleycat winner for “Hid your shoes. you left anyway.”), Deborah Copaken Kogan (“I was twelve; his penis, fourteen.”—watch the hilarious video below), and Baratunde Thurston (”I pulled off the perfect proposal.”—watch his performance). Kimberly Kaye (”Our first date stopped traffic. Literally.”) and musician Michael Hearst are hidden in the group shot below but pictured above (she’s on the bottom row, right; he’s the guy with the guitar, who can also be seen and heard in this video singing 10 six-word songs).

Special thanks to Maya, Amanda, Wendi, Dave, and the whole crew at the 92YTribeca, Galleycat’s Jason Boog, and event co-producer Ashley Van Buren.
