I rely on spellcheck WAY too much. 'Here' in the context of my comment, should have been spelled 'hear'. The 10 year-old class dictation champ me wouldn't have made that mistake.
Ha! Sag, I was a spelling bee girl, myself, all the way through elementary school. In college, I actually tied for first (but took the second place prize) in a spelling bee in History and Evolution of the Language. That little win made me $2.87 and a bus token richer -- everything in my professor's left pocket.
I appreciate the hope (homonym or not). Cupid's been ignoring me for about four years now. I would welcome the arrow.
Re the spelling champ thing, we used to do a thing called 'dictation', where the teacher would recite a paragraph from a book and our class of 10 year-olds would be asked to transcribe what he had said in our exercise books. He would then spell out every word and any mistakes were recorded. It was getting embarrassing because I would NEVER make a spelling mistake, so I consciously decided to make a few mistakes two weeks in a row. The teacher made such a big deal of me making unheard of errors that I chose to go back to being Master Perfect.
That's fantastic -- being able to spell is so important. It's a great thing when you can do it well... and (of course) a terrible thing when you make an error, because you notice it right away! But transcription -- well, that means you listen well, too. Also a great skill.
Mid fifties, married thirty years. My husband has sweetly asked me to try to outlive him, because he doesn't want to face life alone.
His odds are pretty good. Both our mothers (still living!) outlived our fathers. And our grandmothers...
