Backstory
James has always been a gifted and talented athlete. Breathtaking at times. Last year, despite serious pain in his tailbone from cancer, he was back to riding, 20 to 25 miles with a seriously intimidating climb (hill). Prior to that, I don't think he would have bothered to ride if it was under 50 miles. His pain was so severe that he used a mountain bike with big tires and took out about half of the air out of the tires so that it would be a soft, cushion-like ride. Sure it slowed him down, but his passion and desire to ride again were huge. Here is a guy who really appreciated and took advantage of what a body could do. We thought his intense pain was from the damage from the radiation and chemo and would improve. Damn that hope thing. It was the cancer growing in his tailbone and spine and he eventually stopped riding and now walking is even difficult. Yesterday, he had to start using a cane.
