True love. Promised to outlive him.

Backstory

Mid fifties, married thirty years. My husband has sweetly asked me to try to outlive him, because he doesn't want to face life alone.

His odds are pretty good. Both our mothers (still living!) outlived our fathers. And our grandmothers outlived the grandfathers. All the great-grandmothers, too. Still, anything can happen. Anything can happen.

Intense memoir to which I can relate.

DynamicDbytheC says,

This just shot through my heart. Always thought husband of 28 years would outlive me. His grandma was almost 100 when she died and his 78 year-young dad bikes 40 miles, slalom water-skis and plays tennis. Now he has Stage 4 cancer and I don't want to even imagine being without him. Your husband is a smart man.

Undermom says,

Oh D. I'm so sorry. I hope you have many more good days than bad ones ahead of you, together.

What a beautiful tribute to love. Certainly makes one think ...

Wench says,

This was my biggest fear of getting married - spending all those years falling in love and then having to make it without them. I still don't want to think about it. On my side, everyone gets cancer. My chances are pretty good. And his mom transferred a disease to him at birth when their blood mixed during a c-section - not life-threatening now, but has and could again require brutal medical treatment. I get so scared and so lonely thinking about what would happen if we couldn't be together. I just want that scene in The Notebook where they decide to go together and are peacefully taken away in their sleep, holding each other in their arms.

Bobbee says,

So sweet, my husband often says that to me as well but I at this stage in our relationship I figured it is because he doesn't want to raise the kids alone!!!
