I have watched this movie about a hundred times. I know most of the lines by heart. This movie was just like my story, except I never had a Keanu Reeves cute doctor boyfriend! (darn). And I didn't get the happy ending. The guy I just broke up with after 16 years was just like Harry. Soulful when you least expected it. (it was what kept me hooked).
I told him about one of the lines one time--when Harry tells Erika, "I've always told you some version of the truth." and my friend goes, "Yeah." like that's normal....
I must admit that this movie kept me engaged with my friend for several more years, hoping I still would have the happy ending and that he'd have an "aha" moment like Harry did. I love the scene where Harry goes to talk to all the women and there's just this montage of slamming doors.....
I was just thinking of this movie tonight because of Erika's heartbreak scenes of crying. Thanks for the memoir, CF. It was good to "talk" to you about it!
I watched it again last night! So good! Keanu was lovely to look at since I have early Spring Fever! Just to clarify in my comments--I was never engaged to my former sweetheart. He was an escape artist just like Harry! I just used the word engaged in my comment just to mean "stayed involved with him for several mote years" I think it is a more British term and I use it a lot, just because I like how it sounds. I confuse people.
The movie line that you referenced is so poignant because it so aptly describes great, fantastic women who should be loved well. Erika tells the young doctor, "men my age like regular women, and I'm not all that regular." She, like lots of women, was just too together and strong. Fine line we walk sometimes--having a soft heart, but also being independent and confident. Hard to find someone who "gets us". At least, this seems to be true for me.
Mid fifties, married thirty years. My husband has sweetly asked me to try to outlive him, because he doesn't want to face life alone.
His odds are pretty good. Both our mothers (still living!) outlived our fathers. And our grandmothers...

DE...engaged is a good word. "Entangled" might be better.
