Bevvie says,

I now know more about wine and scotch than I have ever known. Plus, I would not try to cheat Mrs. Alexis (she has a shotgun).

Believe says,

I felt so bad for the horse. And I questioned the use of the word "gallons".

NumbrOneAunt says,

I find it fascinating that tony has this image of himself as not being brave, not measuring up to his father and grandfather. but 1) when the horse trailer smashes into the marquee he goes in to work on creating the tunnel to save people and doesn't give it a thought when he could easily have been hurt or killed himself. 2) when he catches the thieves in his shop he's so outraged by how wrong stealing is that instead of going to the restaurant to call the police he just rushes in to stop them and comes within a toucher of being killed - like the british expression i slipped in there? :)

Bevvie says,

which horse, Believe? The one in the trailer at the beginning, or the Orkney's horse that loses the race?

I felt sorry for the little boy.

Aunt, I noticed the irony too, but don't you think he finally realizes that he is brave?

Believe says,

The horse in the trailer, Bevvie.

ba_miracle says,

Yes NumberOneAunt, I found him to be admirable and very brave. It was a good reminder that being brave didn't equate not having fear and that we don't always have a good sense of ourselves.

The book supports what I've said for years "not all water tastes the same".

Wine, fine liquor and horse races are not things that usually interest me but the story is told in a way that grabs you in and makes you interested.
A really enjoyable read.

Bevvie says,

I'm fascinated by women in novels. How do you feel about Flora, Mrs. Palissey, Mrs. Alexis, and Isabella? Individually? As a group?

Believe says,

I, too, enjoyed the aspect of learning about something that I am not extremely familiar while being quite entertained by the actual story. Stealth learning.

ba_miracle says,

I confess to doing a few google fact checking missions in the beginning of the read (it's a quirk of my personality). The way Tony regarded people comes to mind when thinking of Mrs. Palissey. Instead of considering her a nosey, interfering gossip he appreciated those traits.

Mrs. Alexis would be my kind of person. Straight forward, salty bit of an upstanding trouble maker.

An article about Makers Mark whiskey came out while I was in the middle of this book. The story was about how they didn't forsee demand years ago (the whiskey takes some time to age.) The CEO/offspring of the founder made a statement something along the lines of planning to water it down and no one would notice/mind. Tony came to mind.

Mourningdove says,

I also read the book! I really did enjoy the reading the story.

Believe says,

Which character did you find the most of yourself in?

NumbrOneAunt says,

i often fear that i'm most like mrs. palissey: she's nice enough and certainly well-intentioned, but interesting people like tony find her boring.

Believe says,

I'm probably the most like Ms. Alexis.
