I know the story of the Jersey Devil who is suppose to live in the Pine Barrens in South Jersey where I originally came from. I don't know if this is what you mean by folk mythology or not but it is a scary tale that still prevails to this day. Some claim they have seen this creature. Scared the hell out of us when we were kids.
There's Big Mo .... the Missouri version of Bigfoot. Supposedly they live down in the Ozarks area. Lots of woods, lakes, sparce population. My sister and an uncle SWEAR they saw one on a family camping trip.
Yes! Thanks, both of ya. I've always just been really interested in that kind of stuff. I think certain myths exist between truth and non-truth, affixed in people's experience regardless of a lack of scientific verifiability. It's like we will certain mysteries into 'existence' or something. I think humans simply crave true mystery.
