Bevvie says,

It was The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah until I read Push by Sapphire (the movie version was Precious).

marymc says,

A Million Little Pieces - James Frey

Wench says,

Bruchko, by Bruce Olson.

ba_miracle says,

I don't know that it was the grittiest but I was too young (young teen) John Saul- Suffer the Children , Comes the Blind Fury and others.

I read parts of Frey's book.

lillybrook says,

A Million Little Pieces by Frey is... ush, language. I can't stand that book because of the dishonesty surrounding it. Push is pretty gritty.

This is a great question, but it makes me realize: I think I avoid grit. Mystery, yes. Sometimes graphic sex or violence (not a favorite but a reality in many books) -- but grit... I don't know.

MsKillie says,

Bevvie, I just finished Push by Sapphire yesterday! A hard one to get through, but I had already seen the movie so I knew the plot. I would say most books by Chuck Palahniuk are pretty rough to get through, but hiding from the grit of reality isn't something I often do. Keeps a person grounded and thankful for what we have.

Bevvie says,

MsK, Push was a book club selection at work. After reading it, I passed on the movie! Too much grit for me.

illuminatrix says,

Great question, and many ways to interpret the notion of gritty, but I'll go with Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk or Perfume by Patrick Süskind. But then there's stuff like Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane and Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt. Different flavors of gritty. All amazing books.

TheAngstyPoet says,

Push by Sapphire.

I love Palahniuk!!! But yeah he's pretty gritty

ctgoods2 says,

Fight Club, hands down.

Mourningdove says,

Angela's Ashes! That was a wonderful story, griity is a great word to describe it.

kathi_wright says,

'perfume', indeed. also 'a winters bone' by daniel woodrell. and i can't forget 'before women had wings' by connie may fowler.

Bevvie says,

I'll have to check out some of these novels that I have not read, but if there is too much grit I'll have to put the book down.

RaisedByWolves says,

Susan Sontag, Death Kit
