maryjane31 says,

Not much.

Dean6805 says,

For me, everything. Of course, I consider myself very fortunate.

oopsalittle says,

I've had a bad marriage experience and now I consider myself so lucky to be with a great guy. He has slowly rebuilt my trust in men and relationships. He's never been married and has mentioned marriage a few times ( most likely checking out my reaction) not sure if I want to go down that path again - but then again why should he be 'burdened' with my traumatic experience and the deeds of another. Will being married - and having that piece of paper- make any difference to our life together. But I know that it would make him so happy. Confusion

MsKillie says,

I hear ya oopsalitle! I too had a crappy marriage experience- what a waste of time those few years were...At least I learned a lot about what kinds of things I will not tolerate in my life. I have a great guy now though and we may get married, we'll just have to see what the future holds!

marymc says,

I was married 15 years. I believed in him, adored him. Then one day I realized I would never get the last doughnut. It sounds silly, but that was a turning point. It opened my eyes. He'd rather win at pool than see me win. He was the artist, I was to be the breadwinner. He pointed out any lack of skills I had in cooking & cleaning. He thought it was funny to trip me when I was on crutches. He didn't want me physically, because I wasn't perfect. He didn't believe in me or adore me. It ended. I was never getting married again. Then I met a man and on a date we shot pool. I won and he cheered. 8 years later, while shooting pool, he handed me the cue and there was a ring slipped on it. I can't imagine not being married to him.

Wow, I am going to have to refer my sister to this memoir, to read hope in every story. It's a good lesson for myself too. Right now I am working on my own marriage. Thanks for sharing.
