My mama was fanatical about having a man be the first person to enter our house on New Year's Day, so she arranged for an uncle or other male relative to come over first in the morning. She also forbid washing clothes on New Year's Day. Because of her serious observations of these traditions, I observe them now. Of course we ate collard greens and black eyed peas.
