Allow teachers to carry guns? Thoughts?

Backstory

You know, it's a natural if not necessary question in the wake of the events of Friday last. I'm a teacher. I don't own a gun. I'm of a liberal-leaning political affiliation. And I don't know what I think. Perhaps when the sting and grief and outage subside to more manageable amounts, I'll have more of an idea as to what I think. Some things to consider: is this where we are in society? do gun-law advocates have the right to sue districts who implement this type of policy given that schooling is a legal requirement for all children? do gun-rights activists have the right to say which types of weapons should be allowed? and would parents have the right to know which teachers were carrying weapons under the Freedom of Information act? There are more questions than these, I know, but just some things I've got bouncing in my head. I see benefits; I see problems; I'm curious to hear educated people give their opinion.

I teach elemetary grades 4 thru 6, so for me, one answer: STUPID!

Believe says,

This situation is a product of a broken system. And it's not even remotely about gun laws. It's the mental health system. Anyone that has ever had the experience of being the caregiver of someone with any mental health problem knows this fact all too well.

Dhani says,

Believe: I've been tweeting about the urgency now of weeding out of our prison system the THOUSANDS of mentally ill inmates & placing them in Mental Health Centers before they slip through the cracks & wreak havoc on Main St.

TheUnknownComic says,

If you don't trust a teacher to carry a firearm, why do you trust them with your child? Plus, it might cause the kids to not backtalk and act like a fool in class. I had a great 11th grade history teacher who regularly brought in weapons to school, he was a Vietnam Vet (U.S. Marine) and he had a great collection. Sad this last incident didn't happen back then at my high school I KNOW less kids would have been killed.

How about this - In 1964 the general public could go into any gunshop in the U.S. and buy an AR15. In the 1950s a teenager could buy a rifle and ammo at a hardware store without showing I.D. Somehow mass murder wasn't a problem back then but it is now - So the answer is more of what wasn't around then? Really?
